Would a picture password be easier to remember than a pin? |
Welcome to Digital Planet, the weekly BBC World Service programme that reports on technology stories from around the globe.
This week Gareth Mitchell finds out how detectives in Spain are using voice recognition to catch criminals and even terrorists.
And how drawing a picture might replace punching in a pin as the password of choice.
Suspects arrested in Spain now have more than just their fingerprints taken.
For the past year Spanish Police have also been recording a suspect's voice.
This is proving particularly useful during phone surveillance, as it can not only identify suspects, but also prove what they were planning to do.
Emilio Martinez from Agnitio, a voice biometrics company, told Tracey Logan that the technology was even used to catch the Madrid bombers.
Ocean currents are used in long term weather forecasts. Gathering accurate data is becoming increasingly important with climate change.
To collect information on currents, salinity, temperature and pressure, 3,000 floating high tech buoys have taken to the seas.
Gareth Mitchell spoke to Jon Turton, marine observation manager from the UK's Meteorological Office. He says the information they are now receiving from the buoys is much more detailed than they have ever had before.
Jonathan Stewart visits the Industrial Light and Music company (ILM), the visual effects wizards of Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean.
He finds out how the company created a virtual sea using just binary ones and noughts.
Do you find it difficult to remember your pin numbers and ever-changing passwords?
If you do, then scientists at Newcastle University may have a solution.
They have designed an electronic drawing grid that recognises pictures instead of numbers and letters. They hope that drawing your password may soon replace more traditional methods of accessing devices.
