DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- A rock that sat untouched in a Pennsylvania museum's fossil collection for years has rare full-body imprints of not just one, but three, ancient amphibians.

Full-body imprints of ancient amphibians that were found by researchers in a rock collected in eastern Pennsylvania.

Researchers found the imprints in sandstone rocks collected in eastern Pennsylvania decades ago and stored in the museum in Reading, Pennsylvania. The body impressions of the salamander-like creatures are estimated to be 330 million years old, or about 100 million years before the first dinosaurs appeared.

Many ancient footprints have been found, but a full-body animal impression is unusual. The three impressions show the foot-long temnospondyls had webbed feet and smooth skin similar to modern-day amphibians, rather than armored bodies.

"The most remarkable thing about these is they exist at all. This is a very rare preservation," said John Bolt, curator of fossil amphibians and reptiles at The Field Museum in Chicago.

Details were being presented Tuesday in Denver at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.

"They're really some of the oldest body imprints of land-living amphibians," said Spencer G. Lucas of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, who was making the presentation.

"They show you what the shape of the body was, they show you what the texture of the skin was like," Lucas said. "These are things we don't know from bones. They're giving us new information about the anatomy of these long-extinct amphibians."

The fossil could indicate social behavior or even courtship, Lucas speculated, or the impressions also could have been made at different times.

"The real question is why do you have three close together on a rock," he said.

David Fillmore, who was doing postgraduate work with Kutztown University geology professor Edward Simpson, found the impressions two years ago when the two were studying Mauch Chunk Formation footprints in a fossil collection at Pennsylvania's Reading Public Museum.

"We looked at each other and were speechless. It's way beyond anything we could imagine finding," Fillmore said.

Supersonic, manta rays or slower planes? The future of air travel

LONDON, England (CNN) -- White contrails crisscrossing the sky over every major metropolis are a constant visual reminder of the fundamental role of airplanes in modern life.

A world without air travel is inconceivable, but what might it be like in the future? Is the jumbo's jumbo, the Airbus A380, a taste of bigger craft to come? And with energy sources in question, will we even be flying?

Passenger travel is growing at a rate of three percent each year, with air-freight growing even faster. Current projections estimate the number of people traveling by air -- both in the US and abroad -- will double or even triple by 2030.

Meanwhile, fuel prices are hitting record highs, with analysts increasingly expecting oil to break the $100-a-barrel mark, while airplanes are branded as global warming enemy number one because of their habit of depositing CO2 emissions high in the atmosphere.

A legion of aeronautical researchers and designers around the world are seeking to keep up with future demand for air travel while reducing its environmental impact and increase its efficiency. But is it possible?

Dr Juan Alonso, head of NASA's Fundamental Aeronautics program certainly thinks so.

Current research points to a dramatic re-design of airplanes which will not only accommodate higher volumes of air travel but will also be more environmentally friendly than today's craft.

"We have to come up with solutions in the aerospace world. A large part of these solutions come from introducing aircraft with new technologies," explained Dr Alonso.

One of the major drivers in aircraft research is improving craft efficiency. It is conceivable that in craft of the future, fuel burn - which directly affects energy use and environmental impact - could be reduced by anything up to fifty percent.

One way to do this is to change the shape of aircraft.

"Currently we use the tube and wing paradigm," explained Dr Alonso. "We've optimized the heck out of that concept. The Airbus [A380] is almost as good as it can get."

There is still much debate going on in aeronautical circles, with Boeing, the European Research Program and NASA all searching for the optimum aircraft shape.

"Laminar flow," where the turbulence of airflow over a craft's surface is reduced, is one possibility being explored. Laminar planes borrow the huge wingspan of gliders, which maximize laminar flow, with hi-tech smart materials supporting the wings.

Researchers are also looking at using very advanced computers to constantly monitor the load on aircraft wings and change their shape for maximum efficiency in the air. Taking inspiration from nature, these craft mimic the movement of bird and insect wings by morphing dramatically mid-flight.

But currently, the blended wing body looks like one of the best contenders for the future. Research is being conducted by NASA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boeing into the radically changed airframe, which is similar in shape to a manta ray.

The SAX 40 aircraft prototype -- a blended wing body aircraft -- is the fruit of the Silent Aircraft Initiative, a three-year multi-million dollar collaborative project between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cambridge University, England.

As the name implies, the main thrust of the project was to find ways to make planes quieter. But the team found that the same technological changes that make craft quieter also make them more fuel-efficient.

"[This aircraft] provides a lot of opportunity to reduce noise and emissions which is linked to fuel burn. It has the potential to change the game for noise and fuel burn," Zoltan Spakovszky, H. N. Slater Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT and lead researcher in the Silent Aircraft Initiative told CNN.

The blended wing aircraft spreads out the fuselage generating lift compared with the current airplane paradigm -- tube and wing -- in which lift is entirely generated by the wings. This immediately boosts fuel-efficiency.

The SAX 40 embeds the engine in the airframe allowing it to shield noise radiated forward from the engine fans. This is a big step forward particularly at takeoff and landing, where the 'little hurricanes' of air created by the jet engines account for most of the huge roar. Embedded engines also reduce aircraft drag, and consequently fuel-burn, making the craft much more efficient.

But conjuring this plane from theory will be challenging. New flexible materials are needed to accommodate the changed architecture of the fuselage, while embedding engines in the fuselage also has many design implications, not least maintenance access.

"It's a question of can we overcome some [of the] technological risks," Professor Spakovszky explained.

But researchers' predictions may be persuasive enough to entice big business. The SAX 40 is projected to fly 149 passenger-miles per gallon of fuel compared to 120 miles for the best current aircraft of its range and size -- an equivalent fuel efficiency to a Toyota Prius Hybrid car carrying two passengers -- while cutting noise outside the airport perimeter from around 88 decibels to 63.

"People around airports worry about noise, but global warming is a much bigger problem," Professor Spakovszky told CNN. "If you trade the noise reduction for fuel-burn you have a very efficient airframe."

Spakovszky is now heading up a new three-year, NASA and Boeing-sponsored project to push blended wing concepts forward and increase fuel efficiency.

Lower speeds and altitudes to cut fuel by half

In common with both Alonso at NASA and Spakovszky at MIT, Ilan Kroo, Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University believes environmental constraints will be the most critical aspects of future air travel.

"To enable air travel at all we may see a very different kind of airplane and very different kind of operation," he told CNN.

Kroo believes the way we fly planes may change. Currently all commercial airliners cruise at speeds of around Mach 0.85 (85 percent of the speed of sound). Kroo believes in the future planes may slow down, say from Mach 0.85 to Mach 0.75.

He also believes planes could fly at lower altitudes because of concerns that contrails affect the atmosphere. Other environmental impacts would also be reduced. Nitrogen oxide emissions, unburned hydrocarbons and water vapor all have an impact strongly related to how long they stay in the atmosphere: lower altitudes help reduce this.

"It's uncertain, but people are actively planning flight paths at lower speeds and altitudes. The sky in the future may not be filled with white lines," Kroo said.

This would mean very efficient airplanes flying at slightly slower speeds -- a small change in convenience but a profound reduction in environmental impact. A reduction in fuel burn of 50 percent is not out of the question, according to Kroo.

Supersonic flight -- for a select few...

At the other end of the spectrum, efficient supersonic travel could see travel times cut in half by 2030, affecting global commerce dramatically. Research is being conducted into flying at twice the speed of sound but in a manner very different from the world's only other dalliance with supersonic flight -- Concorde.

There are active programs in Europe, Japan and the US looking into noise reduction technologies for supersonic flight. Supersonic craft of the future will also have a similar environmental impact as subsonic craft.

Supersonic craft of the future are most likely to be small, seating eight to ten passengers, and initially used for business travel.

Air travel: a future revolution?

But whether it's manta ray-shaped planes, slower and lower flight paths or a new breed of supersonic air craft, air travel of the future is set to transform.

"Improvements in performance, in noise and emissions are required," said NASA's Dr Alonso. "They are not incremental changes. We will need to come up with radical concepts. I would qualify it as a revolution."

House cat makes scientific history

NEW YORK (AP) -- An Abyssinian cat from Missouri, named Cinnamon, has just made scientific history. Researchers have largely decoded her DNA, a step that may aid the search for treatments for both feline and human diseases.

Cinnamon has 20,285 genes, probably about 95 percent of the animal's full complement.

The report adds cats to the roughly two dozen mammals whose DNA has been unraveled, a list that includes dogs, chimps, rats, mice, cows and of course, people.

Why add cats? They get more than 200 diseases that resemble human illnesses, and knowing the details of their genetic makeup should help in the search for vaccines and treatments, researchers say. The list includes a cat version of AIDS, SARS, diabetes, retinal disease and spina bifida, said Stephen J. O'Brien of the National Cancer Institute.

The new work is reported in the November issue of the journal Genome Research by a team including O'Brien and colleague Joan Pontius. It covers about two-thirds of the DNA of Cinnamon, a research cat that lives at the University of Missouri in Columbia; more complete results are expected next year, O'Brien said.

Richard Gibbs of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who led a team that decoded the DNA of a monkey called the rhesus macaque, called the new work "a good outline" of cat DNA. Scientists are looking forward to the complete version, which will be useful for making detailed comparisons to the DNA of other animals, he said.

The full complement of an organism's DNA is called its genome. In cats, as in people, it is made up of nearly 3 billion building blocks. The sequence of those blocks spells out the hereditary information, just as strings of letters spell out sentences. Decoding a genome, which is called sequencing, means identifying the order of the building blocks.

The new work identified 20,285 genes in the cat, probably about 95 percent of the animal's full complement, O'Brien said. That is similar to the 20,000-25,000 genes estimated for humans.

Family bets GPS will help beat teen's ticket

WINDSOR, California (AP) -- Given the option of contesting a traffic ticket, most motorists -- 19 out of 20 by some estimates -- would rather pay up than pit their word against a police officer's in court.

Though courts do not routinely accept GPS readouts as evidence, somedrivers are starting to use them to challenge traffic violations.

A retired sheriff's deputy nevertheless hopes to beat the long odds of the law by setting the performance of a police officer's radar gun against the accuracy of the GPS tracking device he installed in his teenage stepson's car.

The retired deputy, Roger Rude, readily admits his 17-year-old stepson, Shaun Malone, enjoys putting the pedal to the metal. That's why he and Shaun's mother insisted on putting a global positioning system that monitors the location and speed of the boy's Toyota Celica.

Shaun complained bitterly about his electronic chaperone until it became his new best friend on July 4, when he was pulled over and cited for going 62 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Rude encouraged him to fight the ticket after the log he downloaded using software provided by the GPS unit's Colorado-based supplier showed Shaun was going the speed limit within 100 feet of where a Petaluma officer clocked him speeding.

"I'm not trying to get a guilty kid off," Rude said. "I've always had faith in our justice system. I would like to see the truth prevail and I would like Shaun to see that the system works."

Though traffic courts do not routinely accept GPS readouts as evidence of a vehicle's speed -- and many GPS receivers aren't capable of keeping records anyway -- some tech-savvy drivers around the world slowly are starting to use the technology to challenge moving violations, according to anecdotal accounts from defense lawyers and law enforcement officials.

This summer, for instance, an Australian farmer became a hero to speeders everywhere when he got a ticket dismissed after presenting police with data from his tracking device.

While winning a case this way is far from a sure thing, GPS-generated evidence could at least inject an element of doubt into typically one-sided proceedings, said Jim Baxter, president of the National Motorists Association.

A Sonoma County traffic commissioner is expected to rule within the next two weeks whether to dismiss Shaun's ticket based on Rude's written argument that the motorcycle officer's radar gun was either improperly calibrated or thrown off by another speeding car.

"Radar is a pretty good tool, but it's not an infallible tool," said Rude, who spent 31 years in law enforcement. "With the GPS tracker, there is no doubt about it. There is no human interference."

Rude plans to offer scientific data and experts if his challenge doesn't succeed right away.

Petaluma police Lt. John Edwards said he could not discuss Shaun's case but disputed Rude's contention that GPS is more accurate than a speed gun.

"GPS works on satellite signals, so you have a delay of some type," Edwards said. "Is it a couple-second delay? A 30-second delay? Because in that time people can speed up, slow down."

The device in Shaun's car, originally designed for trucking companies, rental car agencies and other businesses with fleets, sends a signal every 30 seconds that records his whereabouts and travel speed.

His parents signed up to be automatically notified by e-mail whenever he exceeded 70 mph, and the one time he did he lost his driving privileges for 10 days.

Rude said he is talking about the ticket -- Shaun has tried to stay out of it -- to encourage other parents to keep tabs on their teenage drivers using GPS. He said he has told too many parents their child was killed in a wreck.

David W. Brown, a Monterey lawyer and author of "Fight Your Ticket in California," said attacking the reliability of radar guns does not usually get speeders very far, especially if they are unwilling to devote extra time and money to hiring legal experts.

Still, among people who do challenge tickets, the proportion who triumph is relatively large, he said. Their technique? Betting the officer who cited them will be unable to make it to court.

"Statistically, when people do prevail, that is the most common method," he said.

Review: Bundled software plagues Microsoft Webcam

(CNET.com) -- The Microsoft LifeCam NX-3000 is an inexpensive, basic Webcam for laptops that delivers acceptable video quality and little else. The bundled LifeCam software is third-rate -- we prefer the apps that Creative and Logitech bundle with their Webcams -- although the design mirrors the Creative Live Cam Notebook Ultra, which we like.

Not surprising for a Microsoft Webcam, the LifeCam NX-3000 is optimized for use with Windows Live Messenger and Live Spaces. Unless you're partial to Microsoft's instant messenger or blog tool, you're better off with either the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks or the Creative Live Cam Notebook Ultra.

Installing the LifeCam NX-3000 is a simple, three-step process. Install the LifeCam software, install Windows Live Messenger, and then connect the Webcam to your laptop via USB. The LifeCam app is sparse. Along the top are three buttons for snapping a photo, recording an audio clip, and recording video. Along the bottom, your most recent recording -- photo, audio, or video -- is listed as a thumbnail in the bottom-left corner of the window. (More useful would be highlighting the last few videos or photos as with Logitech's QuickCam app.)

A button in the lower-right corner lets you e-mail the clip or photo, but the service doesn't support Web-based e-mail, including Hotmail. Even if you sign up with a corporate or school e-mail account, you're forced to tell the LifeCam software what type of mail server you use (POP or IMAP) and the name of the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Microsoft, why include this button if I'm forced to play 20 questions? The help file suggests I contact my ISP to track down this necessary information to e-mail a Webcam video clip or photo. Really, I'll just go ahead and attach the file myself.

If the last item you've recorded using the LifeCam software is a photo, the button next to the ill-conceived e-mail button lets you upload a photo to your Live Spaces page, should you have one. It's simple to do, but then again, uploading a photo to any blog service is just as easy. A third button in the lower-right corner opens up the LifeCam Files folder, where all of your clips and photos are stored.

The LifeCam NX-3000 is optimized for use with Microsoft's instant messaging service. A button on the top of the Webcam calls up Windows Live Messenger, but not while you have the LifeCam app running. The Photo Swap feature lets you send photos while video chatting in Live Messenger, which is a cool feature for sharing photos and really the only feature I found useful in the software. Even the goofy video effects that come bundled can't compare with what you get from Logitech or Creative. Without any face tracking feature, for example, you don't get to play around with 3D avatars. And even the scenic overlays are lame compared to the video effects available with Creative's and Logitech's Webcams.

Although Microsoft would really like it if you used the camera with its own IM client, the LifeCam NX-3000 works with other IM clients that support video conferencing, including Skype. Video quality on Skype was indistinguishable to that of using either of the laptop Webcams from Creative or Logitech -- not great, but more than passable with decent color levels and relatively smooth movement.

The camera's 1.3-megapixel sensor can capture video up to a resolution of 640x480 and up to 30 frames per second. The Logitech QuickCam Pro Webcam's 2.0-megapixel sensor, by comparison, can record video up to 960x720. And Microsoft's LifeCam software doesn't have anything akin to Logitech's RightLight technology. You're given sliders for adjusting brightness, contrast, hue, among others, but there's no option to have the software optimize the image given current lighting conditions. You're forced to tweak the settings manually or return to the default setting. There are boxes next to each for Auto, but all are grayed out save the box for White Balance (which didn't seem to do anything anyway).

With minimal tweaking, however, we found the colors to be more accurate and vivid than the output from the Creative Live Cam Notebook Ultra; the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks is still far and away the best of the bunch in terms of overall image quality. The Microsoft cam struggled in low light, but instead of a dark image with shadows masking your face, the image became grainier the less light there was. Lastly, despite its small size, the LifeCam NX-3000 surprised us with its clean audio.

The LifeCam NX-3000 is the same size as the Creative Live Cam Notebook Ultra at 3 inches long and an inch high. Its spring-loaded clip can accommodate thicker laptop lids than that of the Creative cam, stretching out to 0.75 inch. The clip allowed for a very secure mount on the three laptops we tested. Unlike the Creative cam, which can be rotated around to face directly away from you, the LifeCam NX-3000 rotates only 60 degrees.

Metacafe users dictate what appears on the front page

But YouTube was not the first to set the online video craze rolling.


Among those video sites that are not YouTube, Metacafe has a good claim to be the pioneer in the field. Founder Eyal Hertzog says he was thinking about such a site back before the days of the dotcom boom.


"The idea was originally crafted in 1998," he told the BBC News website, "that's when I wrote the first document of what it should be."


Back in the days of dial-up most of the video clips people watched arrived via e-mails that were passed around among friends, acquaintances and colleagues.


At the time broadband was only used by big business, so e-mail was the only way that big files could travel.


"Everyone who used e-mail heavily got them," he said, "I just thought that one day it was going to be really big. It really engaged me." Launch pad

The initial conception was not for a video-sharing site that has become so common today. Instead, Mr Hertzog aimed to set up an entertainment channel that could showcase home made clips.


When Metacafe was launched in 2003 it started as a program that fans would download and would act as a portal to the videos that people wanted to show off.


"We went on to the web when broadband became more popular and prices became more reasonable, said Mr Hertzog.


Metacafe now serves up around 450 million videos per month to the 19 million unique users who visit every month. Along with Yahoo, MySpace and AOL it is among the top ten video sites online.


It specialises in short-form videos and no clip on the site is longer than eight minutes. The average clip is 90 seconds long.


As a pioneer Metacafe has gone through many of the troubles that sites such as YouTube, Yahoo and DailyMotion are now grappling with.


Erick Hachenburg, Metacafe's chief executive, said it avoided many of the troubles of rivals by ensuring that there was only one version of each video showcased on the site.

"We can determine whether something has ever been uploaded before," said Mr Hachenburg.


This helps to ward off the problems other sites suffer, he said, because it ensure that, once a clip is labelled as pirated, it will be blocked from appearing on the site again.


"We've never built the business on the basis of piracy," he said. "We've never had long form pirated content on there. Ever."

Stopping copies also helps reinforce one of the ways that Metacafe is trying to distinguish itself in the crowded online video market, said Mr Hachenburg.


"It's the single copy that's the entertainment proposition for our user base," he said.Rank and reward

Many members of that user base, about 80,000 of them, help Metacafe filter the deluge of clips being uploaded. That group acts as members act as an editorial board to rate and review everything uploaded to the site. They annotate the material and flag a clip if it should have a restricted audience.


To help this ranking process, Metacafe has developed software which oversees how those on the editorial board react to the videos they see.


This software notes how much of the clip people watched, whether they watched it more than once and whether it was forwarded on to friends.


The software helps to decide who in Metacafe's regular user community would be interested in the clip.

Limiting duplicates helps Metacafe, like other sites such as Revver, reward those that post original short films to the site.


Metacafe has created a "producer rewards" programme that gives $5 to video creators for every 1,000 views they get.


Since it was set up in October 2006, the programme has handed out more than $800,000. Many of the most popular creators on the site top up their income via the movies they post. One creator, going by the alias KipKay, has made more than $64,000 out the films he has posted.

Be deciphering the text, victims get to see more explicit images
A virtual stripper is helping to defeat anti-spam security checks.

Spammers have created a Windows game which shows a woman in a state of undress when people correctly type in text shown in an accompanying image.


The scrambled text images come from sites which use them to stop computers automatically signing up for accounts that can be put to illegal use.


By getting people to type in the text the spammers can take over the accounts and use them to send junk mail.

The scrambled text systems used to defeat automatic sign-ups are known as Captchas or "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart".


Typically they feature a disfigured word or one overlaid with artefacts that make it difficult for anyone but a human to decipher.


Many computer criminals have been trying to crack these systems to get at the net-based resources, such as e-mail accounts or blogging tools, they are designed to protect.


"The free e-mail services, so far, have been extremely successful at using Captchas to recognise a human being or an automatic program," said Raimund Genes, chief technology officer at Trend Micro.

The novel system for getting round Captchas uses images of a woman called "melissa" who invites victims to decipher the scrambled text. Entering the correct text produces another image and another chunk of scrambled text.


Mr Genes said the Captchas seen with the first versions of the malicious program are all taken from the sign-up system for Yahoo webmail.


In the past many viruses have tricked people into opening booby-trapped attachments with the false promise of seeing explicit images, said Mr Genes, but this was one of the first to actually show people more images if people respond.


Because of the effectiveness of this technology, we have begun to see scammers adapt their tactics


Mr Genes said the program could prove because "the average male e-mail user would want to see more".


So far the two security firms who have spotted the program, Trend Micro and Panda Security, have not seen many copies of it in the wild suggesting few people have been caught out.


Mr Genes said it was very likely a proof of concept program that might find wide use in the future.


"Maybe they are trying it out to slip under the radar," he said. "More and more malware does not want to get any publicity, it wants to be silent and hidden."


The virtual stripper program arrives on machines that are already infected with malicious software, said Mr Genes. The program comes to life when the Internet Explorer browser is used on infected machines.


The Captcha-busting program can run on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003.


Mr Genes recommended that people run anti-virus, anti-spyware and web watching programs to avoid infection and to install updates as soon as they become available.


A Yahoo spokesperson said: "Yahoo began deploying Captcha more than six years ago to help combat the ability for malicious programs to send spam.


"Because of the effectiveness of this technology, we have begun to see scammers adapt their tactics, where human beings solve the puzzles the viruses cannot."


The company added: "Yahoo is continuing to innovate in our defenses against this type of abuse. We have a number of mechanisms to help us detect and respond to abuse."'Prince of death' Meeting the king In pictures

News services The body that oversees how the net works, grows and evolves says it has coped well with its growth in the last 10 years, but it is just the start.

"In a sense, we have hardly started in reaching the whole population," the new chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Brian Carpenter, says.


The IETF ensures the smooth running and organisation of the net's architecture.


With broadband take-up growing, services like voice and TV will open up interesting challenges for the net.


"I think VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol, allowing phone calls to be made over the Net) is very important - it challenges all the old cost models of telecoms," says Dr Carpenter.


"Second, it challenges more deeply the business model that you have to be a service provider with a lot of infrastructure. With VoIP, you need very little infrastructure."

As the new chair of the IETF, his next big challenge is overseeing IPv6, the next generation standard for information transfer and routing across the web.


At Cern, Dr Carpenter helped pioneer advanced net applications during the development of the world wide web, so he is well-placed to take on such a task.


The net's growth and evolution depend on standards and protocols, and ensuring the architecture works and talks to other standards is a crucial job of the IETF.


The top priority is to ensure that the standards that make the net work, are open and free for anyone to use and work with.


Bigger and better?


The net is built on a protocol called TCP/IP, which means transmission control protocol, and internet protocol.


When computers communicate with the net, a unique IP address is used to send and receive information.


The IETF is a large international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers working on the evolution of the net's architecture and the way this information is sent and received.


They make sure it all knits together leaving no gaps.


"We've seen some interesting effects over last few years," explains Dr Carpenter.


"The net was growing at a fantastic rate at the end of the 90s. Then there was a bit of a glitch in 2000.


"We are now seeing a very clear phase of consolidation and renewed growth."


The number of broadband subscribers via DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) doubled in a year to 13 million, according to figures released at the end of 2004.


"The challenges we face are about continuing to produce standards to allow for that growth rate," explained Dr Carpenter.


"Given it [the net] was designed for the whole community, it has done well to reach millions. If you want to reach the whole population, you have to make sure it can scale up."


IPv6, the standard that will replace the existing IPv4, will allow for billions more addresses on the net, and it is gradually being worked into network infrastructure across the world.


"The actual number of addresses with IPv4 is limited to four billion IP addresses.


"That clearly is not enough when you have 10 billion people to serve, so there is technical solution, the new version of IP - IPv6.


"It has much larger address space possibilities with no practical limits," said Dr Carpenter.


Standards are vital to something as complex as the net, and making sure standards are open and can work with across networks is a big task.


The difference this next generation standard, IPv6, will make to the average net user is almost invisible.


"Our first goal is that it [IPv6] should make no difference - people should not notice a difference.


"It is like when the London telephone numbers got longer. A lot of the process will be invisible.


"People are usually given an IP address without knowing it."


Technically deployment has started and the standards for are just about settled, said Dr Carpenter.


'Never-ending battle'


The one problem with the net that may never disappear completely is security. To Dr Carpenter, the solution comes out of technological and human behaviour.


People have to be educated about "sensible behaviour" he says, such as ignoring e-mails that claim you have won something.

If we look at other innovative technologies that fundamentally transformed human communications - the printing press, the telephone and television, to name a few - we are confronted with the fact that it takes generations for their full effects to be understood.

The internet, by comparison, has only existed for three decades, and the World Wide Web is younger still.

The internet, however, stands poised to become the greatest communications platform humanity has ever known. It has profoundly increased access to information around the world, and it has likewise provided a platform for free expression on a scale unimaginable a generation ago.

For a variety of reasons - cultural, political, technological - the internet has grown rapidly.

The benefits it offers and the degree to which we rely on it (for everything from personal communications to global financial transactions), far outstrip its relatively short existence.

As access to the internet spreads to more and more places around the world, more people will come online; they'll access the net through a wider variety of devices, and they'll produce and consume new types of content.

The continued expansion of the internet poses very real challenges to those of us responsible for its health.

Key infrastructure

The robustness and security of the internet will climb in importance as we rely increasingly on it and its services.

Improving the resilience and resistance to attack of key infrastructure such as the Domain Name System (the phone book of the internet) and the routing system will be major focal points for near-term internet development.

Introducing DNSSEC (security for the Domain Name System) and the digital signing of address space by the Regional Internet Registries will assume much higher priority.

Internet-based software and digital goods have historically been vulnerable to various kinds of failures and subject to a variety of attacks. The computer science community is challenged to devise solutions to these problems.

Capacity poses a further challenge to the future of the web. As more devices become part of the internet (think of the three billion mobile phones already in operation), we will need to move to a new internet address space, called IPv6.

With its 128 bits of address space (about 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses), there will be ample address space for the foreseeable future.

It will be a non-trivial exercise to bring IPv6 online in parallel with the present IPv4 system and it is not too early to get started. Efforts in Japan and China have begun blazing trails towards this important new goal.

Stunningly valuable

Going forward, we must also remain aware of limitations of the data we access through the internet. Information on the web varies in quality from completely useless or even damaging to stunningly valuable.

Today's search engines draw the most relevant information to our attention, and as more data become available online, the importance of search engines will only increase. In the future, people around the world will likely look for new ways to identify the authenticity of online information sources.

The idea that all the world's knowledge could be discoverable not just by humans but by programs acting on their behalf at speeds well beyond the superhuman, is one of this century's most exciting opportunities

We will also be confronted with a kind of "information decay" in which digital objects become less and less accessible owing to the age of the software that created it.

As an example: it is already a challenge to watch videos posted on the BBC website in 1997.

Imagine trying to watch the same video in 100 years. Or in one thousand years.

It's not only file formats that change, though. Changes in computer programs, operating systems and even the hardware that we use to build computers will accentuate the challenge of keeping digital information meaningful.

This raises a host of intellectual property questions that will almost certainly need to be considered.

Prosaic opportunities

From a strictly technological standpoint, then, the future of the internet poses a number of challenges to computer scientists. The future of the net also poses opportunities for society as a whole.

Some of these opportunities are prosaic. With home, car and office appliances all online and rich sensor networks as part of the landscape of the internet, it is easy to predict that people will be looking for online services to manage these devices and systems, regardless of where they happen to be.

We have barely begun what will no doubt be a long journey, but already the openness of the web is fostering free expression in parts of the world that need it most

It is clear that programmable mobiles have the potential to become general purpose "controllers" that allow us to interact, possibly indirectly through online services, with the many devices that service us from moment to moment.

The internet is a medium for communicating information, and by democratising access to information the internet is changing people's lives for the better.

We have barely begun what will no doubt be a long journey, but already the openness of the web is fostering free expression in parts of the world that need it most.

There are challenges and setbacks along the way, but the trend is clear and inexorable. At the same time, access to information is expanding rapidly.

Usage spike

When Google News for mobile devices became available in French, the biggest spike in usage outside France was in Cte d'Ivoire.

In the developing world especially, the proliferation of mobile devices and improvements in the ability of those devices to access the web will accelerate access to information.

Every year, humanity produces more data, and we must decide how that data will be found, shared, remembered, and interpreted. As we become better able to cope with huge quantities of information, scientific and otherwise, our appetites for organising and mining it will increase.

We have already witnessed the salient benefits of shared scientific databases such as the online human genome archives.

The idea that all the world's knowledge could be discoverable not just by humans but by programs acting on their behalf at speeds well beyond the superhuman, is one of this century's most exciting opportunities, especially as much of this information may lead to medical understanding and breakthroughs.

As we deepen our understanding of our biology - the move from genetics to epigenetics and the proteome - our understanding of ourselves and the universe around us will deepen.

Internet Service Providers urgently need to roll out the next generation of net addresses for online devices, internet pioneer Vint Cerf has said.

Every device that goes online is allocated a unique IP address but the pool of numbers is finite and due to run out around 2010.


A new system, called IPv6, has been awaiting roll out for 10 years.


Unless IPv6 is switched on in the coming years, some devices might not be able to go online, Mr Cerf has warned.


Mr Cerf, who played a key role in the development of the protocols which underpin the global net, said: "There is a risk of not being able to get online."


He added: "The rate of consumption of available remaining IPv4 numbers appears to be on track to run out in 2010/11."


Mr Cerf is about to step down as chairman of Icann, the body which oversees the net, and is also Google's chief internet evangelist.


Potential shortage


The current system, called IPv4 provides four billion addresses but the explosion in the number of devices which go online has led to the potential shortage.


Although IPv6 was standardised 10 years ago it has not been rolled out at speed.


While modern computers, servers, routers and other online devices are able to use IPv6, internet service providers have yet to implement the system.


"The reason they haven't - which is quite understandable - is that customers haven't asked for it yet," said Mr Cerf, adding, "my job, whether with my Icann hat on or not, is to persuade them to ask for it.

"If you don't ask for it, then when you most want it you won't have it."


IPv6 will create 340 trillion trillion trillion separate addresses, enough to satisfy demand for decades to come.

One complicating factor is that IPv6 and IPv4 are not compatible so ISPs will have to run the two systems in parallel - adding to costs.

Cow-killing meteorite sells for $1,554

NEW YORK (AP) -- Two of the world's most famous meteorites failed to attract buyers at an auction Sunday, while an ordinary metal mailbox zapped by a falling space rock in 1984 was sold for the unearthly price of almost $83,000.

A 30-pound chunk of the Willamette Meteorite, which was found in Oregon in 1902 and has been steeped in ownership controversies for more than a century, was offered by Bonhams auction house at an estimated value of $1.3 million but was withdrawn from sale after bidding ended at $300,000.

Similarly, the 1,410-pound Brenham Main Mass, dug out of a Kansas farm field in 2005, was withdrawn by Bonhams CEO and auctioneer Malcolm Barber after it drew a top bid of only $200,000 -- well short of the pre-sale estimate of $630,000 to $700,000.

In both cases the sellers, who were present, said they weren't worried because potential purchasers were known to be interested in the extraterrestrial rocks even though they may not have joined the bidding.

"I'm disappointed, but it was not through any lack of effort," said Philip Mani, a San Antonio lawyer and geologist who is one of three owners of the Brenham meteorite, along with Steve Arnold, who found it, and Allen Binford, who owns the wheat field near Greensburg, Kansas, where it was discovered.

"We are in the process of putting together a plan, and we have a number of inquiries from people expressing interest."

The entire 15.5-ton Willamette Meteorite has been owned by the American Museum of Natural History since 1908, with pieces loaned or given to other collectors from time to time.

The small piece was offered at auction by Darryl Pitt, curator of the Macovich Collection, the world's largest collection of space rocks, who traded the museum a Martian rock for the Willamette chip in 1998.

The fact that it went unsold was "not really a surprise," Pitt said, adding that he also expected a lot of interest from prospective buyers.

Having sold several other rocks, including a Siberian meteorite _ a product of history's largest known meteor shower -- for the day's top price of $122,750, he called the auction "not a bad day. It shows there is a lot of interest in meteorites."

The couple who bought the Siberian rock declined to identify themselves.

Scientists believe the huge Willamette meteorite, the largest ever found in North America, crashed thousands of years ago in what is now Canada and was pushed southward by glaciers before it was discovered in an area occupied by Oregon's Clackamas Indians.

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, which includes the Clackamas, has objected to the auction of the 30-pound fragment. The tribe believes the meteorite is a sacred object that was sent to Earth by the Sky People; demands for its return to the group have been refused.

"I don't know what to say about their claim," Pitt said after the auction.

Among the more than 50 meteorites, moon rocks and other items that Bonhams auctioned off for a total of $750,000, a surprise star was a mailbox that had sat outside the home of Carutha Barnard in Claxton, Georgia, until it was blasted one night in 1984 by a three-pound rock from outer space.

In spirited bidding, the mailbox -- somewhat the worse for the experience but with its red metal flag still bravely in the "up" position -- went to an unidentified bidder for $82,750 including the buyer's premium of 20 percent. A tiny piece of the rock itself, less than an ounce, went for $7,700.

The Valera Meteorite, noteworthy as the only space rock documented to have caused a fatality on Earth, was sold for $1,554. Its victim in 1972 was a cow in Venezuela.

NASA wrestles ripped solar panel

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Spacewalking astronauts bolted a solar power tower to the international space station on Tuesday, completing an ambitious three-day moving process that ended with elation when the beam's giant solar panels began to unfurl.

A rip can be seen in one of the giant new solar panels unfurled on Tuesday on the international space station.

Their joy turned to concern, however, when a rip was spotted in the second solar panel.

NASA needs to get the tower up and running to prevent malfunctioning station equipment from delaying the addition of a much-anticipated European research lab.

A massive rotary joint is supposed to make sure the solar panel wings on the right side of the space station are facing the sun. But the gear, which was installed in June, has been experiencing electrical current spikes for nearly two months.

The solar panels on the 17-ton girder that was installed at its new location Tuesday were folded up like an accordion for the move, and the first one slowly was unfurled as the seven-hour spacewalk wrapped up, gleaming like gold in the sun.

The crew kept spacewalker Scott Parazynski and Douglas Wheelock apprised of the first solar wing's unfurling as they floated back inside. Their reaction: "Wow, that's great," and "Awesome!"

"It's a good day's work right there," Parazynski said.

The astronauts abruptly stopped the unfurling of the second panel, however, as soon as they saw the rip on the edge of the panel. The panel was almost completely unfurled when the rip was spotted. The astronauts beamed down photos of the torn and crumpled section so NASA can analyze them and determine the extent of the damage.

At Mission Control's request, the astronauts retracted the wing just a bit to ease the tension on it.

A spacewalking astronaut found black dust resembling metal shavings inside the motorized joint on Sunday. NASA has limited the joint's motion to prevent the debris from causing permanent damage, but that also limits the system's ability to generate power for the station.

Parazynski spent part of Tuesday inspecting the matching rotary joint that turns the space station's left set of solar wings toward the sun. NASA will examine images he gathered of the perfectly running unit to compare it to the malfunctioning one.

There were no shavings inside the joint, and Parazynski said everything looked pristine.

"It's right out of the shop, no debris whatsoever," he said.

Parazynski and Wheelock guided astronauts inside the station as they used a robotic arm to hook up the beam to the orbiting outpost's backbone. The spacewalkers then began installing bolts to hold the beam in place and connecting wires to provide power.

"Oh I love this job," Parazynski said as they worked 220 miles above southeast Asia. "Beautiful view."

Given the problems with the right rotary joint, NASA needs the power generated by the newly installed solar panels to proceed with the planned December launch of the European Space Agency's science lab, named Columbus.

That lab and a Japanese lab set to be delivered early next year will latch onto the new Harmony module that Discovery delivered last week.

The space agency added a day to Discovery's mission so spacewalking astronauts could conduct a detailed inspection of the troublesome joint. That work is scheduled for Thursday.

To make room for that inspection, managers canceled a shuttle thermal tile repair demonstration that was scheduled for that spacewalk. The test was added to the mission after a piece of fuel-tank foam gouged Endeavour's belly on the last shuttle flight in August.

Any repairs to the malfunctioning gear would be put off until after Discovery departs.

Discovery is now scheduled to undock from the space station on Monday and return to Earth on November 7.

Computing is not as easy as it's made out to be and nor should it be, says regular columnist Bill Thompson

Sending out an e-mail to 700 people with every e-mail address visible to each recipient is about as far from good practice as you can get, yet that is what a member of the Society's staff did last week.

And in a twist worthy of the most cliched sitcom, the e-mail was an invitation to complete a customer satisfaction survey.

Somehow I think the results will be slightly skewed towards the 'could do better' end of the response scale.

Of course this sort of thing happens all the time when it comes to personal e-mails, and I'm growing used to seeing long lists of e-mail addresses in the To: or CC: field when people announce a change of address or a party invitation.

For some people, it seems, the 'blind carbon copy' or bcc: is a mystery as challenging as the truth about the Knights Templar.

It's somewhat surprising that the BCS doesn't have an in-house e-mailing system that automatically generates one message per recipient.

And even if they haven't managed that rather minor feat of technological wizardry, Microsoft Word is perfectly capable of generating e-mails instead of letters as part of a mail merge. You can even customise individual messages so they look more 'personal'.

Work around

With these tools even unskilled computer users can handle large mailing lists, avoiding the dangers inherent in copying a long list of e-mail addresses from a file or spreadsheet and pasting them into the wrong field in your e-mail.

All it takes is a bit of training and an understanding of what the technology is capable of doing.

But that, I fear, is the problem.

We give people sophisticated IT systems, whether they are off-the-shelf office packages or specially written business software, and expect them to grasp them without too much difficulty.

Unfortunately few of us have any real grasp of what the programs can do, and so we end up finding something that sort of works and sticking with it, however clunky it is.

Someone who knows how to send e-mails and how to do mail merge letters may simply not realise that their word processor can bring the two together seamlessly, because they have neither the time nor the inclination to explore the various options on offer.

And of course the programs themselves are so complex that even experts rarely know every little wrinkle.

This doesn't just apply to word processing. Most people pick up spreadsheets pretty quickly, because they are just like graph paper, while databases seem more complex and harder to understand.

As a result it's particularly common to find people using spreadsheets as databases, storing vast amounts of information in the rows and columns of increasingly complex and error-prone worksheets when a simple two or three table database would do the job simply and efficiently.

There are also many people out there who have worked out how to change the font or size of text in their word processor but have no idea about styles. Instead of using levels of heading and other formatting consistently throughout a document they set each header individually.

It looks fine, until you want to incorporate their work into another document and find that you can't just redefine the styles to make it all look the same, and have to spend ages editing their hard-coded formatting.

Blame game

This is not just about the minor irritations of other people's poor office skills, however.

It betrays a worrying lack of willingness to engage with the computers and programs we all encounter in our daily lives, a lack of willingness that is encouraged by adverts telling that computers can be easy and simple and require no real effort.

But not everything is easy, and not every computer interface is, or should be, simple to learn. Some tasks are necessarily complex, as anyone who has built a commercial website or used a professional photo editing tool will tell you.

By trying to sell computers as intuitive and obvious, as requiring no special skill to pick up or use, we are giving every new user a model of IT that cannot sustain their long-term use.

It is as if we told sixteen year olds that once they can drive a dodgem car at the fair they are safe to go out on the roads, because they can pick things up as they go along.

The disaster of Windows security is certainly Microsoft's fault, as for too many years they concentrated on usability at the expense of user safety.

But it is also our fault too, for not being willing to engage with our computers as complex environments that require constant attention, where our skills must be developed over time and where learning never really stops.

Sending out e-mails with everyone on the To: list is embarrassing, but it also reveals a much deeper malaise and one that we all need to address.

Yes, make computers easier to use, experiment with new interfaces like the radical approach taken on the XO model from the One Laptop Per Child project, and offer simpler and more intuitive interfaces where they are useful.

Strangely enough Apple, who focus more than most on ease of use in their advertising, also do a very good job of offering one-to-one hand-holding for new Mac users.

It is time to stop pretending that ordinary users will not need to apply themselves carefully to learn how to use these powerful systems effectively. We need to make sure that the necessary training and advice is provided when and where it is needed.

Leopard: Does it roar or whimper?

Apple unleashed the latest incarnation of its Mac OS X operating system, called Leopard, on Friday, boasting 300 new features. But is it worth trading in your Tiger for a new big cat?

A new operating system is often more about anticipation than delivery. There are so many new features that a typical user will never think about, let alone use.

The key question is: Will it change the way I use my computer for the better? And the answer for Leopard is a qualified yes.

Installation was painless - an hour to upgrade from Tiger with just a few questions to answer and I was ready to go.

Leopard's features

My Mac - a 2Ghz Macbook with 2GB of RAM - should more than cope with the upgrade but a few clicks in and my machine went into a Kernel Panic and a pop-up window told me to switch off and restart.

Thankfully, since then the machine has run smoothly and many applications seem snappier and more responsive.

The only area that is noticeably more sluggish than under Tiger is my Mac's ability to re-connect to my wi-fi network when I open up the lid of my laptop, or wake it from sleep.

It used to connect within a second or two but now takes between five and 10 seconds. It is not a major problem but an irritant nonetheless.

Despite the boast of hundreds of changes, it is only a handful that will impact on most users and they are a mixed bag.

Time Machine is the killer application - it makes backing-up your Mac painless and turns a chore that few of us remember to do into a pleasure.

If you've lost a file or made a revision to a file in the past, you can simply roll back the individual document to before the changes were made. Ingenious.

Time Machine works for files, folders, applications and the entire system - and it is handled through a fool-proof interface.

Be warned, however: You need a decent sized external hard drive to make it useful and the initial back-up of your system can take many, many hours.

The most useful new feature in Leopard is Quick Look, which lets you examine a file's contents - be it Word document, PDF, or video - without having to open the associated application.

Simply highlight a file, tap space and you can see the contents of the document or photo. It makes finding files and relevant parts of a file an instant delight.

Within minutes, you wonder how you ever lived without it.

Stacks is a new feature designed to make your folders simpler and less cluttered.

It gathers your downloads, for example, into the bottom right hand corner of your dock.

Bizarrely, you cannot use Quick Look at this point - as a click on the document or file opens it inside its associated application.

It's a strange lack of cohesion across Leopard's user interface.

And a Stack - which can be built from any folder of files - is only useful if you have a handful of items within it. Any more than 10 and Stacks is patently a waste of time as it looks just as cluttered as it would inside a normal folder window.

Another addition designed to simplify your digital life is Spaces. It lets you have multiple virtual desktops, which you can configure to suit different needs.

You can have a Space designated for e-mail and productivity programs, another for entertainment programs and so on.

It is a feature "borrowed" from Linux operating systems and is only really useful if you are a power user and tend to need to have many, many applications open at one point.

Some of the key applications in OS X have been upgraded. iChat has been given a big overhaul and perhaps the most useful feature is being able to share the screen of one of your online buddies during a video chat.

It greatly facilitates collaboration across connected machines and gives consumers access to the kind of remote desktop technologies typically reserved for server software.

With iChat you can also share your photographs from iPhoto with your online buddies - not by sending files but by creating a near instantaneous slideshow.

Mail has been given an overhaul also and is now more integrated with other pieces of software on your Mac.

The Finder, which is the Mac's Explorer, has been given the upgrade it has long needed - and has learned some lessons from Vista.

Users can now see the specific location of every file in Finder with a simple path trail and CoverFlow, so popular with album art in iTunes, now extends to all files.

Instead of boring file names, or thumbnails, CoverFlow lets you see the contents of the file. It's like Quick Look on rails and is a welcome option in hunting misplaced files.

In conclusion, Leopard is a solid release which will please most Mac users without radically altering how they use their machine. For die-hard Mac fans it also does enough to distinguish itself from Microsoft's Vista.

Review: Pixma iP4500 a solid, but sort of expensive printer

(CNET.com) -- The Canon Pixma iP4500 is a moderately expensive single-function printer designed for general home use.

Unlike Canon's more photo-oriented single functions like the Pixma iP6700d, the $130 iP4500 lacks memory card slots and a preview LCD.

The iP4500 is a step up from the recently reviewed iP3500; it offers faster print speed, slightly better print quality, and more features, including an auto duplexer.

If your printing needs are minimal, however, we think you should save your money and stick to a less expensive model like the $80 iP3500, but if you print enough to justify the price, the iP4500 is a great option for general printing.

The Pixma iP4500's design is simple and straightforward -- the body is mainly black, with silver accents. It measures 17.5 inches wide, 11.9 inches deep, and 6.3 inches tall, and weighs 15.2 pounds.

The only features in the printer's control panel are a PictBridge USB port, power and cancel/feed buttons, and an input source button that switches between paper trays.

You get two paper input options on this model: the rear input folds open from the top/back edge of the printer, and the cassette pulls out from the bottom/front. Both can hold up to 150 pages of plain paper.

Canon recommends putting stiffer media such as photo paper in the rear input, as paper in the cassette is forced to bend around a roller. Both inputs have adjustable paper guides, so both can handle a wide range of paper sizes. A panel in the front of the printer folds out to serve as the output tray.

The iP4500 uses a five-ink system: pigment black for better text prints, and dye-based black, yellow, cyan, and magenta for better graphics and color blending. The pigment black costs $16.25 to replace and each of the dye-based inks costs $14.25 to replace. Canon estimates that a page of text costs about 3 cents, and a full-color page costs 4 cents to print. Both numbers are reasonable.

The Pixma iP4500 offers a fairly basic feature set. The only connection option is USB, though you can network the printer using a print server.

It offers up a built-in duplexer for automatic double-sided prints, though the print driver gives you the option of manual duplex print jobs.

The iP4500 lacks memory card slots, but it does offer a PictBridge USB port for printing directly from PictBridge cameras and devices. The driver offers the same options as the driver for the iP3500: namely, the ability to create print profiles for common print jobs; photo manipulations options; and paper and source options.

The Pixma iP4500 is a bit on the expensive side for a general-purpose, single-function printer, so we had limited models on hand for comparison.

It stood up well to the competition overall.

It printed black text at a rate of 8.25 pages per minute, slower than the office-oriented HP Officejet Pro K5400, but faster than the home-oriented HP Deskjet 6940. It was much slower with graphics, scoring just 2.47ppm, a far cry from the HP Pro K5400's 6.21ppm.

But the Canon excelled at fast 4x6 photo prints, clocking 2.66ppm, over a full page faster than the Pro K5400 and more than five times faster than the Deskjet 6940. The iP4500 was also faster than the less expensive iP3500 at all print tasks.

The Canon Pixma iP4500 is an all-around good printer. The text prints were nicely dark, though close inspection revealed some jagged edges that could be cleaned up. The color graphics print showed pleasing saturation and sharp details in the photo elements, though the color gradients looked a bit faded and the same issue with slightly jagged edges cropped up.

The 4x6 print was good overall. We liked the sharp details and general quality of the image, but the flesh tones were a bit washed out and could use a bump of warmth.

Overall, the printer's quality is great for everyday home printing--we found it to be slightly better than the print quality offered by the iP3500.

Astronauts perform critical construction job

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Astronauts plowed ahead Monday with the mammoth job of moving a 17-ton solar array truss on the international space station, a task made even more crucial following the discovery of contamination in an important part of the orbiting lab's power system.

A spacewalking astronaut on Sunday found metal shavings inside a joint that is needed to turn a set of solar power panels. Astronauts used a magnet to determine the shavings were metallic.

The rotary joint, launched and installed just four months ago, controls the huge solar panel wings on the right side of the space station to make sure they're facing the sun. It has been experiencing electrical current spikes in the past 11/2 months.

NASA officials have limited the joint's motion to prevent the debris from causing permanent damage. But that also limits the system's ability to generate power for the station.

The glitch raises the stakes for the Discovery crew's ongoing attempt to move the giant solar array truss from one part of the orbiting complex to another.

Failing to install the girder or to unfurl its enormous folded solar wings could cause problems for the planned December installation of the European Space Agency's science laboratory, named Columbus. The lab is supposed to latch onto the new Harmony module that Discovery delivered last week.

Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager, said it's too soon to know whether the joint trouble will affect future flights.

"We have lots of time to work through this problem. It's not an immediate issue," Suffredini said on Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, the astronauts were using two robotic arms to move the girder into place for its scheduled installation during a spacewalk the following day.

The crew used the station's robotic arm to detach the truss from the station on Sunday.

Early Monday, astronauts used the shuttle's robotic arm to grab hold of the truss so the station's robotic arm could be free to inch along 80 feet of rail to a spot near the girder's future home.

Later in the day, the shuttle's arm will pass the truss back to the station's arm to await installation on Tuesday.

The schedule for Tuesday's spacewalk also includes time for an inspection of the joint for the left solar wings. That joint is working fine. Spacewalker Scott Parazynski has been asked to take pictures and samples like those gathered Sunday at the other joint so NASA can compare the findings.

The astronauts have spare parts for the joint with them in orbit, including extra bearings.

But space station flight director Heather Rarick said late Sunday that the astronauts probably won't have time to do repairs while Discovery is docked to the orbital lab. Even more inspections may be added to the two other planned spacewalks, and the three station crew members could troubleshoot later.

Discovery is set to undock from the station on Sunday and land on November 6. Mission managers have determined the ship's thermal shielding is in good shape for re-entry.

Monday's schedule also includes some off-duty time for the astronauts. The day started well for astronaut and Boston native Stephanie Wilson, who heard from Mission Control that the Red Sox had swept the World Series.

"That's great news!" Wilson said. "Go Sox! Woooo!"
